School Visits

Not everyone writes to me after a visit, but it's great when they do.

... Your coming really set our Bookweek off to a good start.  All the children really enjoyed your presentation, from the reception classes to year six.  They loved your poetry and all your books have sold.  I will have to find out if any more are needed.  The writing workshops were exceptional and the children's response was answer to your success.

Bridport Primary School

So, this is what I offer to schools: Poetry performance and creative writing workshops for the children, and INSET for their teachers.

Mike in a schoolI work with children from nursery through to top primary (including Years 7 & 8 in prep shcools) offering any combination of poetry performance and writing workshops to suit your school.

PERFORMANCE

Approximate duration:

Nursery : About 15 minutes.

Reception : About 15 minutes. I'm happy to see two reception classes together, but I do like to perform for them separately from KS1.

KS1: About 30 minutes. Normally for the whole of KS1.

KS2: About 40 minutes for as many as you can squeeze into the hall!

WRITING WORKSHOPS

All of my workshops are designed to ensure that every child succeeds.

KS1: A Y1 workshop would normally be with individual classes, and would last for about 30/40 minutes. I would work from a board or flip chart, and would expect to do all the scribing myself. But I want you to feel that you've had good value from the day, so with Y2 I'm quite happy for classes to double up, providing that it's feasible and there are plenty of helpers.

KS2: Workshops could be for an hour or more, either with individual classes or with two classes together in the hall.

I try to be flexible. So, tell me what your (creative writing) needs are, and I'll try to say 'Yes'.

INSET

Shock horror, I get teachers writing! It's the only way to get a true appreciation of what children are asked to do. But, I'll give you plenty of ideas too... and we'll have fun!

" . . . thank you for the poetry workshop that you gave to the staff . . . it certainly inspired my colleagues to go off and search through the spaghetti of the children`s minds, and already we have had some quite interesting results."
